SCA-certified coffee makers explained, plus how to read coffee maker ratings

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

Search for the best coffee makers consumer reports 2026 and you'll hit paywalls and recycled lists, plus a lot of star averages. The Specialty Coffee Association's certified list is the one public rating built on lab tests. Here's what it covers and what it misses. It also lines up surprisingly well with other reviews of coffee makers, which is worth knowing before you trust any single score.

Short answer

An SCA-certified coffee maker passed lab tests on water temperature and brew time, plus extraction. As of Oct. 27, 2026, the list includes the Moccamaster KBGV Select and the OXO Brew 8-Cup. Breville's Luxe Brewer is on it too, as are Fellow's Aiden and the Café Grind and Brew.

Certification is the closest thing to an objective score among coffee maker ratings. It doesn't judge looks or cleanup, and it says nothing about how long a machine lasts. Use it as a filter. Don't use it as a final ranking, because the list has no opinion about whether you'll still like a machine in year three, whether its carafe drips when you pour, or whether its buttons make sense before your first cup.

What the SCA tests

The certified home brewer program checks three things. Water at the grounds has to reach 92°C (197.6°F) within the first minute. A full brew cycle has to finish in 8 minutes or less. And the coffee has to land in the Golden Cup range, with 18 to 22 percent of the grounds extracted.

Each machine runs at least ten brew cycles, which matters because a brewer that hits the right temperature once and drifts on the next nine runs would otherwise look perfect in a single quick test. The SCA uses a third-party testing center for this, and it says every submission gets a detailed report within about two weeks.

Then comes the business side. Certification carries a $5,000 annual licensing fee on a three-year term, according to the SCA's own page. A maker that skips the fee won't appear on the list, so a missing machine isn't a failed one.

Missing from the list when we checked: the OXO Brew 9-Cup and the Ratio Six, plus the Cuisinart grind-and-brew models. Machines from Ninja and Mr. Coffee aren't there either, and neither is any Keurig. Several of those are still good buys for other reasons.

The OXO 8-Cup is the least expensive certified thermal machine among our picks. That makes it the obvious starting point when someone asks for top rated coffee makers on a normal budget.

America's Test Kitchen recommends it too, so you get lab certification and an editor's endorsement on the same model.

Brew with this if you want the certified list's best value with a thermal carafe.

Choose another if you need a full-size pot for four; the certified Luxe holds 60 oz. See Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal on Amazon

Fellow's Aiden holds two independent signals: SCA certification from 2024 and America's Test Kitchen naming it the programmable winner.

That's rare for a connected appliance. Most smart coffee makers lean on app reviews instead of lab results.

How to read coffee maker ratings

Most coffee maker reviews mix three kinds of evidence, and they aren't equal. Searches for coffee makers reviews tend to surface all three on the same page without saying which is which.

Lab results come first: temperature probes, brew-time stopwatches, refractometer readings. The SCA list and a few editorial labs publish these. They tell you whether a machine can brew well.

Editor testing comes next: someone uses the machine for weeks and reports on taste and cleanup. America's Test Kitchen publishes this kind of review, as do Tom's Guide and The Coffee Locator. It tells you whether a machine is pleasant to live with.

Star averages come last. They blend old and new versions of a product, and they reward low expectations as much as quality. That's why this site collects them but doesn't display them.

When coffee makers recommendations from these sources agree, take it seriously. Agreement between a lab list and two or three editors who bought the machine with their own budgets, used it for weeks and wrote down what annoyed them is about as strong as consumer evidence gets for a kitchen appliance. In 2026 they agree on the Moccamaster at the top and an OXO model for value. They disagree on which OXO, because they tested different ones.

Ratings worries

Does it get the water hot enough?

A certified machine has proven it in a lab. An uncertified one might be fine, but you're trusting reviews or the maker's word.

SCA requirement: 92°C (197.6°F) at the grounds within one minute (Specialty Coffee Association).

How long does a full pot take?

Certified machines brew a full pot in 8 minutes or less. It's one of the few speed guarantees in the category.

Cycles over 8 minutes can't be certified (Specialty Coffee Association program rules).

How long will it last, and can it be repaired?

Ratings rarely cover lifespan. Warranty length is the better proxy, and it varies a lot among certified machines.

Moccamaster: 5 years. OXO Brew 8-Cup and Fellow Aiden: 2 years (Amazon listings).

Ratings FAQ

What are the best coffee makers consumer reports 2026 shoppers ask about?

Paywalled lab scores aren't reproduced here. The public evidence points to the Moccamaster KBGV Select and the OXO Brew 8-Cup. Both are SCA certified. Both have been praised by named editors in reviews you can read without a subscription, which is more than most best-of lists can say about their sources.

What does SCA certified mean?

The brewer passed SCA lab tests on brewing temperature and time, with extraction inside the Golden Cup standard.

Are coffee machine reviews on retail sites reliable?

Use them for durability complaints and shipping issues. Lab results and editor reviews are better guides to brewing quality.

Which top rated coffee makers are not SCA certified?

The OXO Brew 9-Cup and Ninja CE251 both rank well in editor reviews without being on the current list.

How often is the SCA list updated?

Entries carry a certification year and a three-year licensing term, so the list changes as makers certify new models or let licenses lapse.

Do certified coffee makers cost more?

Usually, but not always. The KRUPS Essential Brewer is certified and sits in the mid-price tier.
