Café Specialty Grind and Brew review: the grinder machine that passed the SCA's tests

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

Grind-and-brew machines usually ask you to trade coffee quality for convenience. This Cafe Specialty Grind and Brew review explains why this one is the exception on paper: it sits on the SCA's certified list with the grinder attached. Listing details were logged on Oct. 27, 2026.

Verdict

Buy it if you want whole beans to become a thermal pot, or a travel mug, with one button and lab-tested brewing. Skip it if you'd rather own a separate grinder that outlasts the brewer.

Most built-in grinders are an afterthought bolted onto a mediocre brewer. The SCA's 2023 entry for Café's Grind and Brew describes podless single serve, a built-in grinder, a carbon water filter and app control, so the certified unit is this complete package, not a stripped-down variant.

It replaced the Cuisinart DGB-900BC we originally planned for this slot. That model didn't appear in our listings on Oct. 27 or on a second search on Oct. 28, and the Cuisinart grinder machines that did turn up have no independent test results we could verify. One of them, a thermal DGB-950BCC, came from a third-party seller with a spec table reading 230 volts, which rules it out for US kitchens.

Six grind settings sit on a burr grinder, and you can bypass it for pre-ground coffee. The brewer can make one cup into a travel mug or up to a 10-cup thermal carafe, and it remembers your favorite settings for each.

Café adds Wi-Fi with the SmartHQ app and voice control through Amazon or Google assistants, plus a replaceable carbon water filter.

Brew with this if freshly ground coffee matters to you, and you'd rather maintain one appliance than two.

Choose another if you already own a good burr grinder; pair it with a certified brewer like the OXO 8-Cup and save money. See OXO Brew 8-Cup on Amazon

The certificate that matters here

The SCA certification is the key fact. The Café Specialty Grind and Brew joined the certified home brewer list in 2023. Very few grind-and-brew machines are on that list; the GE Profile Smart Grind and Brew is the other one.

Certification covers the brewing: temperature at the grounds, cycle time and extraction within the Golden Cup range. It doesn't grade the grinder's consistency directly, though a grinder that produced wildly uneven grounds would struggle to hit the extraction target across ten test brews.

We couldn't verify a named 2026 editor review of this exact model, so the card shows a "Listing specs" badge alongside the SCA one. That's enough for the grinder slot, where every rival has less.

The Cafe Grind and Brew specs that matter most: a removable 75 oz water tank with a visible level, about one and a half carafes per fill, a thermal carafe that holds temperature for about two hours, and six grind settings.

Height isn't on the listing. Grind-and-brew machines are tall because the hopper sits on top, and you need room to pour beans in. Measure under your cabinets with that in mind, or plan to slide it forward when you refill.

Who ends up happy with one

Who gets the most out of a certified grind-and-brew:

  • A couple buying whole beans for the first time. One 10-cup carafe covers two people at two 12 oz mugs, about $534 a year in beans at this site's defaults, and the grinder removes the pre-ground step entirely.
  • A commuter. Single-serve mode grinds and brews directly into a travel mug, so there's no half-empty pot left behind.
  • A household with an app-scheduled morning. Program the brew in the app, and the grinder runs before you're awake. Be ready for the noise.

The thermal carafe keeps coffee hot for about two hours by the listing. That's shorter than Breville's four-hour claim but plenty for most mornings.

The grinder chute and the rest

Cafe Grind and Brew cleaning has three parts. Brush out the grinder chute weekly, because coffee fines and oil collect where grounds fall into the basket. Rinse the basket and carafe daily. Replace the carbon water filter about every two months, as Café suggests; third-party six-packs exist on Amazon.

Descale following the app or manual prompts. A filter in the tank slows scale but doesn't stop it.

Oily, dark-roasted beans clog any built-in grinder faster. If those are your beans, clean the chute more often and don't overfill the hopper.

A price we couldn't confirm

On Oct. 27, 2026, the Café's price matched two other machines exactly, so our rules flagged it as unconfirmed. Grind-and-brew machines in this tier cluster at similar list prices, and genuine deals usually show up around holidays.

Compared with a separate grinder plus a certified brewer, the Café costs about the same. You're paying for one footprint and one button.

Worries this one answers

Is a built-in grinder worth it?

On this machine, more than most, because its brewing is certified with the grinder attached. The trade-off is that a grinder failure takes the brewer with it.

Café Specialty Grind and Brew: SCA certified 2023, 6 grind settings (SCA list, Amazon listing).

How hard is it to descale and keep clean?

More than a plain drip machine. Add a weekly chute brushing and a filter swap about every two months.

Replace the carbon water filter about every two months (Amazon listing).

Who it's for

Pre-ground coffee drinkers ready for fresh beans. Small kitchens without room for a separate grinder. People who like scheduling from a phone.

The strongest case is the first one. Moving from a can of pre-ground to beans ground seconds before brewing is the largest flavor jump most households will ever make, and doing it on a machine whose brewing has been lab-tested removes the usual worry that the grinder is attached to a mediocre brewer.

The weakest case is someone who already owns a burr grinder. You'd be paying again for something you have.

75 oz, in carafes

Ten cups at an assumed 5 oz each is about 50 oz per carafe, and the 75 oz tank covers one and a half carafes:

HouseholdCoffee per morningOn the Café Specialty Grind and BrewBeans per year
Solo, one 12 oz mug12 ozOne pot (24% of 50 oz)$134

In the office row, the tank is the limit before the carafe is. Expect a refill mid-morning.

FAQ

Is the Cafe Specialty Grind and Brew worth it?

What are the best Cafe Specialty Grind and Brew alternatives?

The Breville Grind Control for adjustability, the Cuisinart DGB-800 for less money, or a separate grinder with the Moccamaster.

Does the Café Grind and Brew work without Wi-Fi?

The listing describes programming from the digital display as well as the app, so Wi-Fi is optional for daily brewing.

Can I use pre-ground coffee in the Café Grind and Brew?

Yes. The listing says you can use whole beans or pre-ground coffee.

How often do I change the Café water filter?

About every two months, according to the listing.
