OXO Brew 8-Cup review: the certified brewer most couples should buy

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

Our OXO Brew 8-Cup review covers the thermal version (model 8718800) that Amazon sold directly when we logged it on Oct. 27, 2026, plus notes on the glass-carafe twin. It holds the number two spot on our homepage as the best value on the SCA's certified list.

Verdict

Buy it if you brew for one or two people and want certified coffee in a thermal carafe. Skip it if your household drinks more than about 40 oz before work.

This is the coffee maker that makes the Moccamaster hard to justify for small households. It's certified by the same organization, it keeps coffee in a vacuum-insulated carafe instead of on a burner, and it brews a single mug properly when only one of you is up.

Its limit is size. Eight maker cups is roughly three mugs. Past that, you're brewing twice.

OXO's listing says water reaches the grounds at 194 to 205°F, and its BetterBrew system adjusts the cycle for small and large batches. A wide Rainmaker showerhead spreads water across the bed rather than drilling a hole in the middle.

The water tank sits on the right side and is clear, so you can see the level. The drip tray lifts out to make room for a tall mug under the single-serve basket.

Brew with this if you want certified brewing, a thermal pot and a machine slim enough for a small counter.

Choose another if four or more mugs leave your kitchen on weekdays; the Breville Luxe's 60 oz tank suits you better. See Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal on Amazon

Why the evidence is unusually strong

The OXO Brew 8-Cup sits on the SCA certified list with a 2025 entry. The SCA's description of that entry mentions a glass carafe, and the thermal listing we logged also shows "SCA Certified" in its spec table, so both versions carry the mark.

America's Test Kitchen recommends the OXO Brew 8-Cup in its coffee maker roundup and singles out its compact build, simple controls and comfortable carafe. Tom's Guide names it the budget drip pick in its 2026 guide, noting it can brew either a small or a full batch.

Three separate signals is a lot for a machine at this price. The one thing nobody claims is that it beats the Moccamaster on build or warranty.

Fitting it under cabinets

The OXO Brew 8-Cup specs that matter most in a small kitchen are about size. At 13.5 in tall on a 10.5 by 7 in footprint, it's one of the easiest certified brewers to fit under upper cabinets. The listing says so directly. Seven inches wide is narrower than most toasters.

It draws 1,400 watts and weighs about 10.3 lb, so it won't slide around. The brew basket is white plastic, which matters only if you're trying to avoid plastic; if you are, read the no-plastic guide.

Three households, one 8-cup pot

Three different mornings, priced at this site's default bean cost:

  • A night-shift nurse filling one 16 oz travel mug. The single-serve basket brews straight into it. About $178 a year in beans.
  • Two people working from home, three 8 oz mugs each. 48 oz is more than the pot holds. Brew a full pot at 7, then a single-serve mug after lunch. About $534 a year.
  • A couple with weekend guests. Weekdays fit one pot; Saturdays need a second. The thermal carafe means the first pot is still hot when the second finishes.

The carafe is what makes the second mug taste like the first. OXO calls it double-wall vacuum insulated. It won't keep coffee scalding all day, but it won't cook it either.

If you'd rather see the pot, OXO sells a glass-carafe version that sits on a timed warming plate. Same brewer, same certification. It also comes with a reminder light for descaling.

The cleaning mode, and the carafe

The OXO Brew 8-Cup has a cleaning mode, and the listing mentions it directly. How to descale: pour in descaler and water, start the cycle, then run plain water through twice.

How often? The glass-carafe sibling lights its clean button after every 90 brew cycles, which works out to about three months of daily use. That's a sensible schedule for the thermal version too, sooner with hard water.

Daily care is a rinse of the basket and a wash of the carafe. Thermal carafes collect coffee oil on the inside wall, so give it a long-handled brush and a little dish soap every few days. A splash of descaler in hot water clears brown film if it builds.

Thermal or glass, and who sells it

The OXO Brew 8-Cup price changes too often to print, but the seller has been steady: on Oct. 27 and again on Oct. 28, 2026, Amazon itself sold the thermal version, which is the one to prefer for returns.

A bundle with 100 filters came back at a higher figure than the machine alone. Do the math before you buy a bundle; filters are cheap separately. The glass version usually lists a little lower than the thermal one. Watch for that gap when OXO Brew 8-Cup deals appear, since the thermal carafe is worth paying a little more for.

What it answers

Can it make just one cup?

Yes, and well. The OXO ships a single-serve basket that brews into a mug or travel mug, which most 8 to 12-cup machines can't do without thin results.

Single-serve capability with the included basket (Amazon listing). The glass version's accessory handles 2 to 4 cups.

Will it fit under my cabinets?

Very likely. The OXO is 13.5 in tall and the listing calls it sized to fit under cabinets.

10.5 x 7 x 13.5 in (Amazon listing). Most US kitchens leave about 18 in between counter and upper cabinets.

Alternatives

If eight cups is too small, step up to a bigger tank. If you want a timer, OXO's own 9-Cup has one. See OXO 8-Cup vs 9-Cup and Moccamaster vs OXO 8-Cup for the side-by-side tables.

Who it suits

Solo drinkers and couples get the most from the 8-Cup. The single-serve basket covers the mornings when one person is home, and the full pot covers two people at a normal pace.

Renters with small kitchens should look here first. At 7 in wide and 13.5 in tall, it's one of the few certified machines that fits a narrow counter under low cabinets without anyone measuring twice.

It's the wrong machine for a family of four who all drink coffee, because eight maker cups is only three or four real mugs, and brewing a second pot every morning gets old fast.

How far 40 oz goes

OXO doesn't state the cup size on this listing, so the table assumes the common 5 oz cup, about 40 oz a pot:

HouseholdCoffee per morningOn the OXO Brew 8-CupBeans per year
Solo, one 12 oz mug12 ozOne pot (30% of 40 oz)$134
Couple, two 10 oz mugs each40 ozOne pot (100% of 40 oz)$445

Family, three 12 oz mugs36 ozOne pot (90% of 40 oz)$401

The single-serve basket handles the solo row better than a full pot would; the table shows the pot only.
