About Isadora Venn
Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).
Isadora Venn is a pen name. The person behind it would rather you judge the work than a headshot, so there's a letter badge instead of a photo and a work log instead of a résumé.
Who writes here
Isadora writes about the machines that run before anyone is awake. That means drip brewers mostly, with other machine types where readers ask about them.
There are no credentials listed here because none are being claimed. What you can check instead is the method below, the dated work log, and the corrections when something turned out wrong.
Method
- Collect the current Amazon listings for each candidate, including model numbers and spec tables, and log the date.
- Check every candidate against the SCA's certified home brewer list, by exact model.
- Read named editorial reviews and use a result only for the exact model it tested. A review of the Moccamaster KBT says nothing direct about the KBGV Select.
- Weight the evidence: roughly 40 percent outside results, 35 percent the listing, 25 percent how well a machine answers the twelve buyer worries.
- Write the answer first and the reasons second. Put the caveats where a buyer will actually see them, which usually means next to the button rather than in a footnote three screens further down.
Work log, Oct. 27 and 28, 2026
- Logged two collection files: 162 listing rows, 154 unique products.
- Converted 11 prices that arrived without decimal points; flagged 18 prices that appeared on three or more unrelated products; marked 5 used or renewed listings. No flagged price informed a ranking.
- Checked the SCA certified home brewer page and recorded every entry by year.
- Read coffee maker coverage from the four publications named on the About page, plus Ratio Coffee's brew-path FAQ. Eight searches and page reads in total.
- Found that the Ratio Six listing's bullets describe the Ratio Four, and set them aside.
- Found that the only CE251 listing was renewed and a CE201 listing showed 240 V from a third-party seller; switched that button to an exact-model search for the day.
- Drew 44 product illustrations so no two products share an image.
- Oct. 28: logged a third file of 50 rows aimed at the gaps. A new CE251 sold by Amazon turned up, so its button became a direct link.
- Oct. 28: the Chemex listing's model number confirmed Ottomatic 2.0; its spec table lists a plastic reservoir, which changed its place on the no-plastic page.
- Oct. 28: the Precision Brewer appeared only as a used offer; the DGB-900BC still didn't appear; a DGB-950BCC listing turned out to be a 230 V unit.
- Oct. 28: logged whole-bean and K-Cup prices and replaced the calculator's placeholder defaults with them.
- Oct. 28: added model-specific refills (Claro cartridges, Aiden and OXO papers, two spare glass pots), a 14-cup Ninja for offices and a $20 OXO pour-over for pod-free single cups, with 13 new illustrations.
Corrections log
- Oct. 27, 2026. The grinder slot on the homepage moved from a planned Cuisinart DGB-900BC to the Café Specialty Grind and Brew. The Cuisinart wasn't in the listings, and the Café is SCA certified.
- Oct. 27, 2026. An early draft implied America's Test Kitchen picked the KBGV Select. Its favorite is the KBT, the thermal sibling. Fixed on every page that mentioned it.
- Oct. 27, 2026. The OXO Brew 9-Cup was described as certified in planning notes. It isn't on the SCA's current list; pages now say so.
- Oct. 27, 2026. The pods-versus-beans example on the homepage said $409 a year. The correct figure at the stated defaults is $414.
- Oct. 28, 2026. The calculator started from placeholders: $13 a pound and 75 cents a pod. It now starts from logged listings, $17 for a 2 lb bag of store-brand whole beans and 48 cents a pod. The homepage's two-person example fell from $414 a year to $256, and pages that said beans win "by a wide margin" now say what the numbers say.
- Oct. 28, 2026. The grinder guide linked Cuisinart's DGB-950BCC. The only listing we found is a 230 V unit from a third-party seller, so the link is gone and the pages warn about it.
- Oct. 28, 2026. The no-plastic guide said the Ottomatic listing didn't describe materials. Its spec table lists a clear plastic reservoir; the page now says so.
- Oct. 27, 2026. The author note named NBC Select as a source. That review couldn't be checked on Oct. 27, so it was removed.
