OXO Brew 9-Cup review: set it at night, pour at dawn

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

This OXO Brew 9-Cup review looks at the matte black listing we logged on Oct. 27, 2026, alongside The Coffee Locator's April update and the SCA's current certified list. It's our pick for people who want coffee waiting when the alarm goes off.

Verdict

Buy it for a programmable thermal pot with simple controls. Skip it if you want SCA certification on the box; the 8-Cup has it and the 9-Cup currently doesn't.

Plenty of programmable coffee makers exist. Few of them pair a timer with a thermal carafe and a published brewing temperature, at a mid-range price. That combination is why the 9-Cup earns a spot.

Its single control dial is the other reason. You choose cups, set the clock and set the wake-up time with one knob and a press. It's the least fiddly timer we've seen described in a listing.

The 9-Cup brews into a double-wall vacuum carafe, so a pot made at 6 a.m. hasn't spent two hours on a burner by the time the second person gets up.

OXO's listing quotes water at 194 to 205°F on the grounds. A freshness timer counts how long the pot has been sitting, and pause-and-pour lets you take a mug before the brew finishes.

Brew with this if you'll set a timer every night and want the pot to stay hot without a hot plate.

Choose another if you rarely plan the night before; the certified 8-Cup brews the same size for similar money. See OXO Brew 8-Cup on Amazon

Good reviews, no SCA mark

The Coffee Locator's April 2026 update names the OXO Brew 9-Cup its best value pick among drip coffee makers. That's the strongest independent signal for this model.

The SCA list is where it gets complicated. The 9-Cup isn't among the certified home brewers as of Oct. 27, 2026, even though OXO quotes the same brewing temperature window that it quotes for the certified 8-Cup. Certification has to be paid for and renewed, so absence can mean a lapsed license rather than a failed test. We can't tell which from the outside, and we won't guess.

What we can say: the temperature claim is specific, the carafe is thermal, and an editor who used it rated it highly this year. That's enough for a homepage spot, though not enough to rank it above the certified machines.

The OXO Brew 9-Cup specs on the listing leave out height, weight and warranty. That's an odd gap for a $150-plus appliance. OXO's 8-Cup listing describes a two-year warranty on OXO Brew appliances generally, but we haven't seen that stated on the 9-Cup page itself, so confirm before you rely on it.

OXO doesn't say how many ounces a "cup" is on this listing either. If it follows the common 5 oz convention, nine cups is 45 oz. Treat that as an estimate.

Mornings on a timer

Three mornings where a timer actually earns its keep:

  • An early commuter and a later riser. The pot starts at 5:40 for a 16 oz travel mug, and the second person pours a 10 oz mug at 7:30 from the same thermal carafe. About 26 oz, roughly $289 a year in beans at this site's defaults.
  • A house of three, one 12 oz mug each. That's 36 oz, about seven maker cups, comfortably inside one pot. Roughly $401 a year.
  • A parent with a newborn. The timer means coffee exists before anyone is awake enough to make it. That's not a number, but it might be the best reason to buy a programmable machine.

The freshness timer is small and useful. It tells you whether the coffee in the carafe was brewed 20 minutes ago or three hours ago, which a thermal pot otherwise hides.

Cleaning a machine that brews unattended

Cleaning the OXO Brew 9-Cup mostly means the brew basket and showerhead area, after each pot. Coffee oil builds up on showerheads, and on a machine that brews unattended, a clogged head is easy to miss.

The manual covers how to descale the OXO Brew 9-Cup with a coffee maker descaler. The listing doesn't specify an interval. Take the 8-Cup's 90-cycle reminder as a guide: roughly every three months of daily brewing, more often with hard water. Always follow the descaler with two plain-water cycles before setting the timer again.

Wash the thermal carafe by hand. A long brush helps, since the narrow opening makes it hard to reach the bottom with a sponge.

Pricing next to the 8-Cup

We don't print the OXO Brew 9-Cup price, and on Oct. 27, 2026 there was a reason to be careful with it: the matte black version came back at exactly the same figure as the glass-carafe 8-Cup. Our rules flag prices that turn up on three or more unrelated products, so we treated it as unconfirmed.

OXO Brew 9-Cup deals do happen, and the 9-Cup and 8-Cup usually sit close together. When one drops in a sale, check the other; OXO prices them as alternatives.

Worries it covers

Will a hot plate make it taste burnt?

Not here: the 9-Cup uses a vacuum-insulated carafe, so there's no plate under the pot at all.

Double-wall vacuum-insulated thermal carafe (Amazon listing).

Does it get the water hot enough?

OXO says yes, with a specific range. The SCA hasn't confirmed this model on its current list, so you're trusting the maker's number plus editor reviews.

Water hits the grounds at 194 to 205°F (Amazon listing). Not on the SCA certified list as of Oct. 27, 2026.

Alternatives

The OXO 8-Cup vs 9-Cup page lays the two side by side. In short, the 8-Cup trades the timer for certification and a single-serve basket.

Who it's for

Early risers who set the machine the night before. Shift workers. Parents who want coffee ready before the kids are up.

The common thread is a fixed routine. If you'll set the timer five nights a week, the 9-Cup's dial and thermal carafe beat any certified machine without a clock, because the best brewing temperature in the world doesn't help a pot you have to remember to start while you're still half asleep and looking for your glasses.

If your mornings vary, buy the certified 8-Cup instead and press the button yourself.

Nine cups in mugs

Nine cups at an assumed 5 oz each is about 45 oz. OXO doesn't state the cup size, so treat the percentages as estimates:

HouseholdCoffee per morningOn the OXO Brew 9-CupBeans per year
Solo, one 12 oz mug12 ozOne pot (27% of 45 oz)$134
Couple, two 10 oz mugs each40 ozOne pot (89% of 45 oz)$445

The thermal carafe matters most in the remote-worker row, where the last mug is poured hours after brewing.

FAQ

Is the OXO Brew 9-Cup worth it?

If you'll use the timer, yes. It's one of the few mid-priced programmable machines with a thermal carafe and a published brewing temperature.

What are the best OXO Brew 9-Cup alternatives?

The OXO Brew 8-Cup for certification, the Breville Luxe Brewer for capacity and settings, and the Ninja CE251 for budget.

Is the OXO Brew 9-Cup SCA certified?

Not on the SCA's list as checked on Oct. 27, 2026. The 8-Cup is.

Who should buy the OXO Brew 9-Cup?

Anyone who wants a pot ready on a schedule and drinks it slowly enough to need a thermal carafe.

How many ounces does the OXO 9-Cup make?

The listing doesn't say. At the common 5 oz cup, nine cups would be about 45 oz.

Does the OXO Brew 9-Cup fit under kitchen cabinets?

The listing doesn't give a height, so measure before you buy. Allow a few inches above the machine for opening the lid when you fill it, since a timer machine is often filled at night under dim light.
