Keurig alternatives: one good mug, no pod bill

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

Most people searching for Keurig alternatives like the convenience of one cup at a time but not the cost of pods. A few machines brew a single mug from grounds properly, and they pay for themselves quickly.

Short answer

The best Keurig alternative is the OXO Brew 8-Cup: it brews a single mug from grounds with its own basket and is SCA certified. The cheapest alternative to Keurig is a Chemex and a kettle, if you don't mind pouring, and any cheaper alternative to Keurig that uses grounds will pay for itself within months.

If someone in your house won't let go of pods, the Ninja DualBrew keeps pods available without making them the default, which tends to be the gentlest way to move a pod household toward grounds without a breakfast-table argument every morning for a month.

The single-serve basket is the reason it's here. Grounds in, mug under, press brew. It's slower than a pod but tastes better, according to everyone who has reviewed both kinds of machine, and it costs far less per mug.

Brew with this if you want one mug at a time without pods.

Choose another if you need coffee in under a minute; nothing podless matches a Keurig on speed. See Ninja DualBrew GP161 on Amazon

Aiden's single-serve basket and app scheduling make it the closest thing to pod convenience with fresh grounds. It's certified, short enough for low cabinets, and it brews a full pot when guests arrive.

Brew with this if you want pod-style convenience with real coffee and don't mind the price.

The halfway house. One side takes pods, the other brews grounds from a single cup to a full carafe. Use the pod side for the person who insists and the grounds side for everyone else.

Brew with this if someone at home won't give up pods entirely.

Choose another if everyone is ready to switch; a podless machine is cheaper to run. See OXO Brew 8-Cup on Amazon

The pod math

At this site's defaults, a 10 oz mug costs about $0.30 in store-brand beans and $0.48 as a pod. One mug a day for a year is about $111 in beans against $175 in pods. That's a smaller gap than most pod-versus-beans articles quote, because big-box pods have gotten cheap; the argument for beans here is as much about taste as money.

That gap pays for an OXO Brew 8-Cup within roughly two years for a single drinker, and much faster for two. Add a household where one person drinks three pod mugs a day and the switch can pay for itself before the first descaling reminder ever lights up. Run your own numbers in the cost per cup calculator.

Worries

Pods or beans: what does a cup really cost?

Pods cost more per mug than beans at nearly any realistic price. Switching is the cheapest coffee upgrade there is.

One 10 oz mug a day: about $111 a year in beans versus $175 in pods at this site's defaults (Brew Clock math).

Can it make just one cup?

Yes, without pods: the OXO 8-Cup and Fellow Aiden both have single-serve baskets.

OXO Brew 8-Cup: single-serve basket. Fellow Aiden: brews from 1 cup (Amazon listings).
