Best coffee maker for office kitchens, sized by headcount

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

The best coffee makers for office use solve a different problem than home machines. Nobody owns the pot, nobody descales it, and the second person to arrive gets whatever the first person left on the burner. Size the machine for the rush, then plan who cleans it.

Short answer

For an office of five to ten, buy the Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal: a 60 oz tank, SCA certification and a carafe that holds coffee above 150°F for up to four hours. On a tight budget, a Ninja CE251 brews 12 cups for far less, but on a hot plate.

If the office splits between pod people and pot people, a Ninja DualBrew keeps both camps happy. Bigger teams should look at two brewers rather than one huge one, so a broken machine doesn't stop the morning.

The Luxe is our pick because its thermal carafe holds heat for hours and the tank holds 60 fl oz. In an office, those two numbers decide whether the 10 a.m. crowd gets coffee.

Leave it on the Golden Cup preset and lock nobody out of anything. The integrated Claro Swiss filter helps when office tap water is questionable.

Brew with this if your team drinks steadily through the morning and someone is willing to swap the filter now and then.

Choose another if the budget won't stretch past $100 for the machine; buy the Ninja and a big thermos. See Ninja 12-Cup CE251 on Amazon

The CE251 is the inexpensive workhorse. Its 60 oz reservoir lifts out for filling at the sink, there's a 24-hour delay start for the first person in, and the warming plate is adjustable.

Turn that plate down. Four hours on a hot plate is the most common reason office coffee tastes burnt.

Brew with this if you need a full 12-cup pot on a small budget.

Choose another if coffee sits for hours in your break room. A thermal carafe is worth the extra money there. See Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal on Amazon

Offices rarely agree on coffee. The DualBrew takes pods on one side and grounds on the other, from a single cup to a 12-cup carafe, with one 60 oz reservoir.

It's tall at 15.47 in, so check the space under any cabinets in the break room.

Brew with this if half the team uses pods and half wants a real pot.

Choose another if everyone drinks drip; pods would only raise the coffee bill. See Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal on Amazon

The CE251's bigger sibling, sold by Amazon: 14 cups, a 70 oz reservoir and the same 1 to 4 cup small-batch setting. One-year warranty.

For larger teams, the SCA list also includes the Moccamaster CDT Grand, a 60 oz thermal brewer aimed at offices. It wasn't in any of the listings we logged, so there's no button for it here.

Sizing by headcount

Count drinkers, not employees. Assume two 8 oz cups each before lunch, then add a little for the meeting that always seems to start right when the pot runs dry and the person who made it is nowhere to be found.

  • Up to 4 drinkers: about 64 oz a morning. One 12-cup pot, brewed once, nearly covers it.
  • 5 to 8 drinkers: 80 to 128 oz. Two pots, or one big-tank machine refilled once.
  • 9 to 15 drinkers: two brewers side by side, or a commercial brewer this site doesn't cover.

The Office row in our cost per cup calculator runs eight people at two cups each. At default prices, beans come to about $1,379 a year less than pods for that group.

Office worries

What works for an office?

Big tank, thermal carafe, simple controls. Pods only if people won't share a pot.

Breville Luxe: 60 fl oz tank. Ninja CE251: 60 oz reservoir. Keurig K-Duo: 72 oz shared reservoir (Amazon listings).

Will a hot plate make it taste burnt?

In offices, almost always, because the pot sits. A thermal carafe is the single best upgrade for break-room coffee.

Ninja CE251 and DualBrew plates: up to 4 hours. Breville Luxe carafe: above 150°F for up to 4 hours without a plate (Amazon listings).

How hard is it to descale and keep clean?

Assign it. Office machines scale up fast because nobody owns them. Put a descaling date on the calendar.

Café's grind-and-brew filter: swap about every two months. OXO glass 8-Cup: descale light every 90 cycles (Amazon listings).

How long does a full pot take?

Speed matters most at 9 a.m. A certified brewer finishes a pot inside 8 minutes by rule.

SCA certification fails any brewer whose cycle runs over 8 minutes (Specialty Coffee Association program rules).

The Moccamaster is here for small teams that want certified coffee and don't mind brewing twice. Its 40 oz pot is the limit.

Keeping an office machine alive

Post a short checklist by the machine. Empty the grounds and rinse the carafe, then refill the tank. People will do steps that short.

Descale monthly in hard-water areas. Offices brew more pots per week than homes, so scale builds faster.

Buy filters and descaler in bulk. The accessories page lists refills by model.

Office FAQ

What are the best coffee makers for office use?

The Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal for quality and a big tank, the Ninja CE251 for budget, and the Ninja DualBrew when pods are in the mix.

How many cups does an office coffee maker need to make?

Plan on two 8 oz cups per drinker per morning, then divide the total ounces by 5 to get maker cups.

Are pod machines good for offices?

They're quick and tidy, but they cost far more per cup than a shared pot. Use them for the few who refuse drip.

Should an office buy coffee makers from Staples or Amazon?

Office supply stores and Amazon often carry the same Ninja and Mr. Coffee models. Compare the full model number; bundles sometimes change the suffix.

How often should an office coffee maker be cleaned?

Rinse daily and descale monthly in hard-water areas, or whenever the machine's light asks.

Thermal or glass carafe for an office?

Thermal. Office coffee sits longer than home coffee, and a hot plate ruins it.
