Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

Your first coffee maker should be hard to get wrong. That means few settings, a carafe that keeps coffee decent, and a cup size you can understand. These are the simple coffee makers we'd hand to someone who has only ever bought coffee out.

Short answer

The best coffee machine for beginners is the OXO Brew 8-Cup. It's certified by the SCA, so the brewing is handled for you, it keeps coffee hot without a burner, and it can make a single mug when you're starting out.

If you'd rather have one switch and nothing else, the Moccamaster is even simpler, just pricier. On a tight budget, a programmable Mr. Coffee does the basics for under $40.

Four buttons, a water tank with clear marks, and a brewer that already knows the right temperature. That's about as forgiving as coffee makers for beginners get.

The single-serve basket is the beginner's friend: brew one mug while you figure out how strong you like it, without wasting half a pot.

Brew with this if you're new to brewing at home and want results that don't depend on getting settings right.

Choose another if you know you'll want a timer from day one; that's the 9-Cup's main feature. See OXO Brew 9-Cup on Amazon

The Moccamaster has one switch for power and one for half or full pot. There's nothing to program and nothing to misread at 6 a.m.

It costs more than most first machines. The five-year warranty is the argument for buying once instead of twice.

Brew with this if you'd rather spend more now than replace a cheap machine in two years.

Choose another if you're not sure you'll keep brewing at home; start cheap and upgrade later. See Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable on Amazon

A fine first machine if you're testing the habit. It brews now or later, and the listing explains its cup size in plain numbers, which saves a lot of beginner confusion.

Strong Brew mode helps when the coffee tastes weak, the most common beginner complaint.

Brew with this if you want to try home brewing without spending much.

Choose another if you already know you love coffee; the OXO brews better and keeps it hot without a plate. See OXO Brew 8-Cup on Amazon

Coffee maker basics

Most bad first pots come from four mistakes, and none of them is the machine. Fix these and a $35 brewer will make better coffee than a $300 one run carelessly, which is the most useful thing a beginner can know.

Too little coffee. Start with two level tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 oz of water. If you own a scale, use 55 grams per liter, which is the SCA's reference ratio. Weak coffee is nearly always under-dosed coffee.

Stale or wrong grind. Buy whole beans if you can and grind them medium for drip. Pre-ground is fine for a start; use it within a couple of weeks of opening.

Old coffee in the pot. Glass carafes on hot plates turn coffee bitter within an hour or two. Pour what you'll drink, or buy thermal.

Skipping the cleaning. Rinse the basket and carafe every day. Descale every few months. A beginner who cleans beats an expert who doesn't.

One more of the coffee makers basics is the one people forget entirely: your tap water, which makes up about 98 percent of every cup, so whatever it tastes like straight from the faucet is what your coffee will taste like too. If it tastes of chlorine, so will the coffee. A filter pitcher fixes that cheaply.

Beginner worries

How big is a 'cup' on a coffee maker?

A coffee maker cup is about 5 oz, not a mug. Read "8-cup" as about three mugs.

Mr. Coffee: 1 cup = 5 fl oz. Moccamaster: 10 cups = 40 oz (Amazon listings).

How hard is it to descale and keep clean?

Easier than it sounds: buy a descaler, run it through, then run two pots of plain water. Machines with a reminder light make it nearly automatic.

KRUPS Essential: the power light blinks fast when it's time to descale. OXO glass 8-Cup: reminder after 90 brews (Amazon listings).

Can it make just one cup?

Yes, on the right machine. On a basic 12-cup brewer, a one-mug batch often comes out thin.

OXO Brew 8-Cup: single-serve basket included. Ninja CE251: small-batch setting for 1 to 4 cups (Amazon listings).

For a first machine, the rows to care about are capacity and carafe. Leave temperature to the certified models and stop worrying about it.

What beginners can skip

Apps and Wi-Fi. They're fun once you know what you like, and confusing before, since a phone full of brew profiles assumes you already know whether you prefer a light roast at a long bloom or a dark roast brewed fast and hot.

Grind-and-brew machines. They add a grinder to clean and a second thing to go wrong. Buy a plain brewer, then a burr grinder if you get hooked.

Twenty strength settings. You need one good default and one stronger option at most.

Espresso. It's a different hobby. The learning curve is much steeper and the entry ticket costs more. If you want lattes, get a milk frother for drip coffee first and see if that's enough.

Beginner FAQ

What is the easiest coffee maker to use?

The Moccamaster: one switch, no programming. The OXO Brew 8-Cup is close behind with four labeled buttons.

How much coffee do I put in a coffee maker?

Two level tablespoons per 6 oz of water to start, or 55 grams per liter if you weigh it. Adjust to taste from there.

Should a beginner buy a programmable coffee maker?

Only if you'll set it every night. Many people buy a timer and never use it.

What simple coffee makers are worth buying?

The Moccamaster for build quality and the OXO Brew 8-Cup for value. On a budget, the Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable is simple and inexpensive.

Do I need a grinder as a beginner?

Not on day one. Fresh pre-ground coffee is fine to start. Add a burr grinder once you know you'll keep brewing.

How do I clean a coffee maker for the first time?

Run one full tank of plain water before your first brew, then rinse the basket and carafe after each use.
