Best budget coffee maker for 2026, and what you give up at each price

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

The best budget coffee maker 2026 shoppers can buy still costs less than a month of café lattes. The catch is that cheap machines rarely publish brewing temperatures, so you pick on what the listing does say about cup size and carafe, and on how long the plate stays on.

Short answer

Under $40, buy the Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable (2247213). If you can spend a little more, the Ninja CE251 brews hotter by most accounts and adds a small-batch mode. The cheapest certified option is the KRUPS Essential Brewer.

Budget machines brew perfectly drinkable coffee with fresh beans, and in blind tastings most people struggle to tell a well-dosed cheap pot from an expensive one when both are poured within a few minutes of brewing. Where they lose points is consistency: water temperature drifts and the pot sits on a hot plate. You can work around both.

BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Programmable: a short 2026 review

The BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Programmable was one of the two finalists for the under-$40 slot, and the listings made the decision for us. The stainless CM1231SC came back with no specs beyond its title, a CM1331S listing had no price at all, and a CM1110B price arrived as "$2530" with no decimal point, which our rules flagged.

So is the BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Programmable worth it? It's a reasonable machine, and many households run one for years. We just couldn't verify enough from the listings to rank it, and the closest alternatives say more: the Mr. Coffee states its cup size, shut-off timer and dishwasher-safe parts. Prices and deals on these models move weekly; the button checks the current one.

Budget worries

Pods or beans: what does a cup really cost?

A cheap machine with beans beats an expensive pod habit within months. The machine price is the small number; the coffee is the big one.

Two people, two 10 oz mugs a day: beans about $445 a year at this site's defaults, pods about $701 (Brew Clock math).

Will a hot plate make it taste burnt?

Budget machines all use glass on a hot plate. Drink the first pot within an hour and it won't matter much.

Mr. Coffee 2247213: plate shuts off at 2 hours. Ninja CE251: adjustable plate, up to 4 hours (Amazon listings).

How big is a 'cup' on a coffee maker?

On a 12-cup budget machine, the pot holds about 60 oz. That's five 12 oz mugs, not twelve.

Mr. Coffee: 12 cups = 60 fl oz, 5 fl oz per cup (Amazon listing).

The budget columns are thin because budget listings are thin. When a spec reads "Not listed", ask the seller or check the manual before you count on it.

Making a cheap machine brew better

Use more coffee than the scoop suggests. Cheap machines tend to brew a little cool, and a slightly higher dose compensates. Start at two level tablespoons per 6 oz of water and adjust.

Pour the pot into a thermos as soon as it's done. That gets around the hot plate problem entirely for the price of a travel mug.

Descale on time. Scale coats the heating element, which cools the water further. Every few months with a descaler, monthly if your kettle shows white crust. Cleaning and descaling a BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Programmable works the same way as on the Mr. Coffee, and how to descale either one fits in a sentence: descaler through a full brew cycle, then two cycles of plain water.

Wash the basket and carafe after each use. Dishwasher-safe parts help; old coffee oil makes fresh coffee taste stale.

Budget FAQ

What is the best budget coffee maker in 2026?

The Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable under $40, or the Ninja CE251 if you can find a new one for a little more.

Are cheap coffee makers hot enough?

Most don't publish a temperature. The Ninja CE251 is often praised for hot coffee; the KRUPS Essential is the cheapest machine here on the SCA's certified list.

How much should I spend on a coffee maker?

Between $35 and $60 buys a decent programmable drip machine. Spending $150 or more mainly buys a thermal carafe and temperature control.

Where can I compare prices on the best coffee makers near me?

Big-box stores often carry the same Mr. Coffee and Ninja models. Match the full model number, since store versions sometimes differ.

Do budget coffee makers last?

They often run for years, but warranties are short or unlisted. Descaling regularly is the best thing you can do for lifespan.

Is the cheapest coffee maker cheaper than pods in the long run?

Yes, quickly. Pods add hundreds of dollars a year for a two-person household at typical prices.
